Li Bai · The Immortal Poet · Tang · Li Bai
“床前明月光,疑是地上霜。舉頭望明月,低頭思故鄉。” “Before my bed the bright moonlight — I took it for frost upon the ground. I raise my head to gaze at the bright moon, lower it and think of home.” Li Bai’s best-loved quatrain, perhaps the most familiar poem in China. All 20 characters are set vertically, each collected from public-domain rubbings: 16 are in Yan Zhenqing’s hand, from his Duobao Pagoda and Yan Family Temple steles and the Appointment of Zhu Juchuan attributed to him (Song rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei); 床, 頭 and 低 survive intact in no Yan rubbing, so 床 comes from Liu Gongquan’s Xuanmi Pagoda Stele (Tang, small-script version), 頭 from the Tang epitaph of Yuan Fuye (755) and 低 from Zhao Mengfu’s Zhu Xi’s Poems on Joy (Yuan). Borrowed characters are matched to Yan’s stroke weight, size and ink tone. Bright moon in ink wash.
