Li Bai · Tang · Li Bai
“天下傷心處,勞勞送客亭。春風知別苦,不遣柳條青。” “The most heartbreaking place under heaven is Laolao Pavilion, where travellers are seen off. The spring wind knows the pain of parting, and will not let the willow twigs turn green.” Li Bai’s five-character quatrain on Laolao Pavilion, the farewell spot south of Jinling (Nanjing), where departing friends were given a willow sprig. All 20 characters of the poem are set vertically, each collected from public-domain Tang rubbings: 19 are in Yan Zhenqing’s hand, from his Duobao Pagoda, Yan Family Temple, Yan Qinli, Zang Huaike and Yuan Zi (元咨碑; Ming rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei) steles; 客 (guest), which survives intact in no Yan rubbing, comes from Ouyang Xun’s Huangfu Dan Stele (ink rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei). The poem is in the Complete Tang Poems, juan 184. Red sun and distant hills in ink wash.
